Creating your Logo

StartFragment

It seems like everyone these days has a brand for something.

Your business brand is the mark of ‘who you are’ and what you are representing. It can be what sets you apart from your competitors. Creating a logo that gives you that ‘edge’ from the others, to stand out from the crowd – can sometimes be an exhausting task when you don’t know exactly where to start.

The logo is a graphic symbol that represents a person or company. You may even see a logo used without the name alongside of the business that it is associated with.

Whether you’re starting a small business, running social media for someone, or writing a blog, you want to create a logo that stands out from everyone else, a logo that people will instantly recognise as YOUR brand. BUT how do you create such an image that represents all these things, encompassing a product, presence and uniqueness in the company you are representing – and in one logo?

1. Who is your competition?

You want to stand out from your competition, so see what they’re doing and then see what you can do different to distinguish yourself from the rest.

2. Choose some of your favourite brands for inspiration.

What logos do you like and whose reputation do you value – apart from those in the same industry. This doesn’t mean copying, but learning about why they use the colours, font and style of logo for them to achieve their success, and see how you can be apply that methodology to your own brand.

3. What does your logo say about you?

What do you want people to think when they see your logo?

4. What colour(s) should you choose?

There is a psychology with colour, so consider this perhaps when choosing for your logo. Google the colour(s) and see what the result is? It can help define you and your business purely by the colour choice as well. For instance, green = sustainability and the environment…..

5. Which font do I choose?

Something legible and memorable. Easy on the eye.

6. Should I have text only, an image, or both?

You want to make people instantly think of you when they see your logo. For instance, Instagram has the silhouette of a camera, Twitter has the bird……yet we can identify the brand by the logo. Depending on the brand / product you are promoting - depends on which way you should go. There may be a need to show both.

7. Minimalistic designs are popular.

Consider how your logo could be designed to appear most simple. Remember the old saying, ‘Less is More’…………it rings true!

Creating your Logo

You can start your own logo from scratch or you can edit existing logos. There are programs that can help you choose shading and colours to compliment your design. However, it is advisable to have an idea on how to design a logo from start to finish.

Without some basic knowledge of graphic design, you would likely stumble around trying to make combinations without a clear understanding of the process, wasting valuable and costly business time.

If you decide this process is too difficult, there are many logo design programs online that can take you through a step-by-step process.

There are some easy logo design programs that are used by both beginners and professionals :

  • Adobe Illustrator – this can appear a little difficult for beginners, so choosing a more basic program for someone new to design may be better suited.

  • Logomaker – If you’re after a quick and easy logo, this is easy to use and understand with only a few steps. They have a huge image selection to build on, and you can download these images for free. It allows you to add text, choose font, colours etc. to create your unique logo design.

Some others to look into:

  • vistaprint.com.au

  • FreeLogoServices.com

  • graphicsprings.com

Alternatively, if this is all too time consuming and you want to hand over the hard work to someone else, you can find many designers, or freelance marketing people out there who don’t charge the earth, and can usually have a logo turned around to you in no time.

Wishing you every success with your Business.

Happy Logo Hunting!
